The National Society of High School Scholars To Give Outstanding High School Students Honors, Scholarships In Nation's Capitol On May 1

For Immediate Release

ATLANTA/EWORLDWIRE/April 27, 2004 --- The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) will hold its annual Scholar's Day event on Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Washington, DC. With activities to recognize outstanding students and with the award of several scholarships, the program will take place in the Russell Senate Office Building.

The NSHSS provides scholarships to its student members who meet a demanding set of academic, leadership and community criteria. The Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships are given in the name of Mr. Nobel, a senior member of the legendary Nobel Prize family and the honorary chair of the NSHSS; they are the top scholarships at $5,000 each.

At the Scholar's Day event on May 1, the recipient of a Claes Nobel Academic Scholarship will be Katherine Van Schaik from Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina. Other scholarship recipients being honored at the event include National Scholar Award winners Daliah Aqbal of Burke, Virginia, Ronald Berkowsky of Sicklerville, New Jersey, Alhaji Cherif of New Carrollton, Maryland; and Ian Tapu of Hauula, Hawaii, as well as Folasade Odeniyi of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who will receive the first annual Robert P. Sheppard Leadership Award for outstanding initiative in community service.

Among the featured speakers at the event will be Sandra Thurman, president of the International AIDS Trust; the Hon. Jack W. Buecher, President and CEO of Presidential Classroom, and Nila Vehar, director of development of the National Association of College Admissions Counselors. Student speakers include NSHSS members Raelee Toye, Miss Teen Global USA, of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Kara Skarda, U.S. House Page, of Trinity, North Carolina. The keynote address will be delivered by Claes Nobel.

"These students have already reached great heights by consistently demonstrating academic strength and community leadership, and we are proud to show our pride and support with our current round of scholarship awards," said Mr. Nobel. "What they are doing in their schools and in their hometowns is truly admirable, and each of them highlights the hope and the confidence we all should have in our young people."

The National Society of High School Scholars was formed in 2002 to recognize academic excellence at the high school level and to encourage members of the organization to apply their unique talents, vision and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world. Currently, the NSHSS has nearly 70,000 members in a total of 68 states, countries and provinces.
