Smoke Free Society Encourages Fathers That Smoke To Quit For Father's Day

For Immediate Release

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla./EWORLDWIRE/June 17, 2005 --- Smoke Free Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping smokers quit and educating kids not to start, is encouraging loved ones to get involved this Father's Day and help fathers quit smoking and make them more aware of the dangers of secondhand smoke.

As part of its "Save Your Loved-One's Life" campaign, Smoke Free Society brings loved ones together to help them quit smoking, as support is the key in a successful quit and remaining smoke free. The "Buddy System" allows children to work with their fathers or grandfathers through the entire quitting process - from preparation, quitting to the follow-up support. Loved ones and fathers are encouraged to visit Smoke Free Society's website to take the first step in quitting smoking before its too late. Most importantly, fathers are strong role models for their children and grandchildren. Fathers who smoke send the wrong message to their young and impressionable children and grandchildren.

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disease, killing over 440,000 people a year in the U.S. and nearly 3.7 million worldwide. Secondhand smoke kills and sickens tens of thousands every year. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, those most affected by secondhand smoke in homes are children because their bodies are still developing. Exposing children to the hazardous poisons in secondhand smoke can hinder the growth of their lungs and put them in danger of severe respiratory diseases, effects that can last a lifetime.

"Secondhand smoke affects nearly everyone. I can't tell you the countless number of heartbreaking stories I've been told by people losing their loved ones to secondhand smoke, and they never smoked! And people are not the only ones affected by secondhand smoke, dogs in smoking households have a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer and cats are three times as likely to develop lymphoma, the most common feline cancer," said Rez Seyedin, founder of Smoke Free Society. Seyedin continued, "As an ex-smoker, I know quitting isn't easy, but possible, especially when you have the support of the loved ones around you. Fathers must quit for their loved ones if not for themselves."
