High School Football Team Adopts Sturge-Weber Foundation
It's Not Just About The Game
For Immediate Release
MT. FREEDOM, N.J./EWORLDWIRE/Aug. 23, 2005 --- In Roxbury, New Jersey, the athletic fields are being lined, the players are hitting hard and the local high school football team is learning about more than just winning plays. They are learning about a rare neurological disorder, Sturge-Weber syndrome, and ways they can help raise awareness.Along with the usual emphasis on strength, speed and agility, football coach Cosmo Lorusso of Roxbury High School is challenging his players to look outside themselves and appreciate the strength and courage it takes to struggle for achievement when a person does not have speed or agility.
Sturge-Weber syndrome, a disorder that is present from birth, has no known cause and no cure. It usually includes a facial port wine stain birthmark, seizures and glaucoma.
The Sturge-Weber Foundation, of Mt. Freedom, N.J., was invited to a recent scrimmage to distribute educational literature, provide a photo display and raise funds. Two other teams, Lenape Valley High School and Shabazz High School were the visiting teams.
Last season, the Roxbury team participated in the Foundation's "Believe" bracelet sale, taking home educational literature and maroon wristbands. After hearing about the cause, many parents sent their players back with a request for more bracelets.
The Sturge-Weber Foundation provides education and friendly support to individuals and parents of children affected by Sturge-Weber syndrome. It funds several research projects studying the cause, a possible cure and better treatment options.
