Dr. Benjamin S. Carson Sr. To Be Keynote Speaker At The 2005 Health Legacy Of Cleveland Award And Scholarship Dinner
For Immediate Release
CLEVELAND/EWORLDWIRE/Sep. 15, 2005 --- On Sunday, October 9, 2005, Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., world renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and author, will deliver the keynote speech "Think Big" at the Health Legacy of Cleveland Award and Scholarship Dinner in the Grand Ballroom at Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights, Ohio at 6:00 p.m. University Hospitals Health System of Cleveland is the presenting sponsor of the event.

Carson had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream until his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Carson persevered and today is director of the division of pediatric neurosurgery and a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Among his accomplishments, Carson gained world-wide recognition when he led a medical team that separated West German Siamese twins in 1987 and guided a team of South African doctors in the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins (joined at the top of the head) in 1997. His three books, Gifted Hands, Think Big and The Big Picture provide inspiration and insight for leading a successful life.
The 2005 Health Legacy of Cleveland Award will honor the living legacy of Timothy L. Stephens, Jr., M.D., for his long service, dedication to being an orthopaedic physician in Cleveland, president of the Ohio State Medical Board, President of the Medical Staff of the former Forest City Hospital, member of many community and professional organizations and a leader in the Cleveland area. He carries on his legacy being also the father of two daughter physicians, Drs. Susan and Amy Stephens.
Cleveland Municipal School District students pursuing health careers will receive scholarship awards. Medical and dental school students will receive awards who attend Case Western Reserve University Dental School, Case Western Reserve University Medical School in Cleveland and Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee.
Limited seating is available. Individual seating begins at $150. Corporate tables range from $1,500 to $5,000. Event registration is available at www.healthlegacycleveland.org.
