The NSHSS provides scholarships to its student members who meet a demanding set of academic, leadership and community service criteria. The Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships are given in the name of Nobel, a senior member of the legendary Nobel Prize family and the honorary chair of the NSHSS; they are the top scholarships at $5,000 each. There are also National Scholar Awards given of $1,000 each.
At the Scholar's Day event on May 13, the National Scholar Award recipients in attendance include Jennifer Chao, of Ellicott City, Maryland; Sunny Cowell, of Burlington, New Jersey; Kate Flores, of Stamford, Connecticut; Stephanie Glagola, of Middletown, Maryland; Christopher Parish, of Wichita Falls, Texas and Santi Wong, of Baldwin, New York. "These students have already reached great heights by consistently demonstrating academic strength and community leadership, and we are proud to show our pride and support with our current round of scholarship awards," said Nobel. "What they are doing in their schools and in their hometowns are truly admirable, and each of them highlights the hope and the confidence we all should have in our young people."
The National Society of High School Scholars was formed in 2002 to recognize academic excellence at the high school level and to encourage members of the organization to apply their unique talents, vision and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world.
