The Sturge-Weber Foundation Announces Centers Of Excellence

    For Immediate Release

MT. FREEDOM, N.J./EWORLDWIRE/June 13, 2006 --- The Sturge-Weber Foundation (SWF) announces the establishment of the SWF’s Centers of Excellence in eight states around the country.

This new initiative will promote the comprehensive care necessary for treating an individual who has a port wine stain (PWS), Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) or Klippel-Trenaunay (KT).

The centers will collaborate with the Medical Advisory Board of the SWF to guide and direct clinical and basic research endeavors funded by the SWF and other sources.

According to Karen Ball, CEO of the Sturge-Weber Foundation, “The SWF recognizes the collaborative care received at the Centers plays a key role in improving the quality of life for individuals living with Port Wine Stein conditions. Together patients, dedicated physicians and the SWF will increase the pace of discovery.”

The standard of care provided at a Center of Excellence will meet or exceed established guidelines to proactively manage the care of individuals with PWS, SWS and KT in a collaborative process by board-certified physicians and allied health care professionals.

These clinicians will have experience or an expressed interest in caring for individuals with SWS, PWS or KT. The various pediatric and adult specialties included but not limited to this care are: neurology, neuropsychology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, developmental pediatrics, ophthalmology, dermatology, plastic surgery, endocrinology, cardiology, genetics and social work.

The services may be provided at a Center of Excellence or though a network of referrals.

Centers of Excellence will be established in Scottsdale, Ariz., Los Angeles, Calif. Denver, Colo., Atlanta, Ga., Boston, Mass., Detroit, Mich., New York City, N.Y. and Long Island, N.Y., and Houston, Texas. A center will also be established in Paris, France.
