Göteborg, Sweden/EWORLDWIRE/Aug. 11, 2003 --- GNER a leading UK train operator will commence testing Icomera’s Wireless Onboard Internet™, a solution to provide real-time high-speed Internet access to trains. The tests will take into consideration a number of key factors for providing a new service to enable GNER’s first and standard class passengers, as well as staff, to use the Internet and check emails, whilst travelling on their high-speed trains.Committed to the delivery of a whole new travel experience, GNER have initiated a major wireless data communication trial with a view of introducing a new Internet service aboard their fleet of trains. Having experienced a commercially running Wi-Fi service aboard a train in Scandinavia, GNER is now working with the solution provider Icomera to trial this technological breakthrough in UK travel.
Icomera was the first company in the world to sign a commercial agreement with a train operator, as well as having a number of installations for their new wireless communication system marketed under the name of Wireless Onboard Internet(TM).
GNER’s chief executive Christopher Garnett says, “With more and more passengers using laptops and other personal devices on our trains, we believe that the timing for providing wireless Internet services to our passengers and staff couldn’t be better. The trial will be performed over the coming months and will be based on technical and customer evaluations of the systems performance. After the trial GNER will make a decision on a wireless communication system which could be implemented on all trains, as an integrated part of the GNER service concept.
