Dec. 11, 2006: Sturge-Weber Foundation Focuses On Angiogenesis In The Nervous System With National Institute Of Neurological Disorders And Stroke

Workshop in Bethesda, Md.

For Immediate Release

MT. FREEDOM, N.J./EWORLDWIRE/Dec. 11, 2006 --- The Sturge-Weber Foundation (SWF) will co-host a workshop with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) on Angiogenesis in the Nervous System held at the Bethesda Hyatt Hotel in Bethesda, Md., December 11-13, 2006.

An invited group of participants from medical and research institutions will focus on research in this understudied area. Goals of the workshop are to promote collaboration among researchers already working in this area and to attract new researchers to the field.

According to Karen Ball, CEO of the Sturge-Weber Foundation, the meetings will provide researchers working on basic mechanisms of angiogenesis with an introduction to Sturge-Weber syndrome and other congenital disorders of angiogenesis, with the hope these researchers will develop translational research projects on Sturge-Weber syndrome.

A Satellite Meeting on Sturge-Weber syndrome will include the SWS research group and interested participants from the angiogenesis workshop. A review of the natural history of the disease and genetics will follow discussions to identify potential research projects.

Chairman for the conference is Gabrielle Leblanc, PhD, Program Director of Neurogenetics of NINDS.
