Curators Choice June candidates, May N*de-of-the-Month.

NEW YORK/EWORLDWIRE/June 4, 2008 --- --- Of 579 works of art submitted by 54 artists worldwide - a Barebrush record number of submissions, director of the Christopher Henry Gallery of New York City and guest curator, Bart de Koning Gans, chose 30 artworks by ten artists.

The curators' guidelines for barebrush suggest one or two submissions maximum per artist, but de Koning Gans felt strongly about consistency of language and its variety between artists. The June 2008 N*des-of-the-Month calendar contest emphasizes the clarity of his vision.

"I'm sure it's a disappointment to a lot of artists," said Barebrush CEO Ilene Skeen. "We have a lot of great art on the site, but using a different guest curator each month ensures that we imitate real-world conditions. It's important for curators to be happy with the calendar each produces - that the show truly represents the individual concept of art of the nude if it were to show at any gallery."

In addition, Skeen continued, "I am somewhat embarrassed that my work is included, but that was apparently part of Bart's vision as well."

De Koning Gans added: "Curating for Barebrush was a great experience. Though I struggled with the rules a bit, I feel strongly about the images I put forth. June comes across as consistent and shows my interest in line and the development of language. I feel each artist has taken the nude and appropriated it to make it their own - rather than just a display of a model."

Commenting on the fact that only ten artists were included, gallery owner Chris Henry smiled and shrugged while commenting, "That's the business. You find a few artists you like, and you push it."

De Koning Gans made it clear that it wasn't business considerations that directed his choices but artistic sensibilities. The curator later wrote that he apologized "for breaking the rules, but this is [my] way of curating, and when an artist sends out their work out to be criticized and chosen by a curator, this is what can result."

The May 2008 calendar had its own story. Objecting to "Man's Point of View" by Francien Krieg (Netherlands), the previous PR company summarily dropped Barebrush from its roster. "It was a mad scramble to find Eworldwire,” said Skeen, "But it was worth it. And totally gratifying that Francien's painting wins May 2008 N*de-of-the-Month."
