Curators' Choice July Candidates, June Winners

NEW YORK/EWORLDWIRE/July 1, 2008 --- Design aesthetic is the premise behind the July 2008 calendar. Guest curator, Tim Newton, is a dedicated and enthusiastic collector. He is the founder and curator of "American Masters at SCNY," an annual exhibition. For the July calendar over 600 artworks were submitted, and the process of deliberating over each choice was daunting; "long and careful" is an appropriate description of the curator's work.

Newton's selections are notable for the variety of approaches and their consistently strong images.He selected 31 pieces by 26 artists mindful of the curator's guidelines. "Good design," he said during a break, "is the major factor."

In the end, only four artists were selected for multiples: Guenter Knop, Jean Marcellino, Jennie Rosenbaum and Sara Swan.

For placement, Newton selected, "Amy," by Sara Swan for July 1st honors; "Elyssa," by Jon Rettich for July 2nd; and "Fit," by John Luce Lockett for July 4th. About Sara's work, Newton noted simply, "I am a fan."

Five artists, indicated by asterisks (*), are candidates for the July Curators' Choice Awards.

Winners for the June Curators' Choice Awards are announced after a month of voting. Top honors go to New York artist Jacqui Morgan for her watercolor, "Woman Turning in Chair." The June calendar was curated by Bart deKoning Gans, director of the Christopher Henry Gallery in Nolita.
