Junk Food Pizza Challenge Tossed Up By London Nutritionist Foods For Life

A Leading Nutritionist has Challenged Pizza Restaurants to Add a Healthy Vegan Option

For Immediate Release

LONDON, United Kingdom/EWORLDWIRE/Nov. 14, 2008 --- To celebrate Animal Aids' Vegan Month and 64 years of veganism, London nutritionists at Foods for Life ('http://www.foodsforlife.org') have devised the world's healthiest pizza recipe and challenged London's junk food pizza restaurants to clean up their act.

The nutritious Foods for Life Vegan Month Pizzaz Pizza recipe has 64 ingredients, an ingredient to mark every year of veganism's 64 year history during which vegans and vegetarians have encouraged people to eat more fruit and vegetables and plant-based protein.

Celebrity Foods for Life TV Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says, "Over 88 percent of us still don't eat enough fruit and vegetables. It's estimated 12 percent of the U.K. don't eat any fruit and vegetables at all - as one of the most ubiquitous fast foods and probably the least healthy, we decided to target the mass produced junk food pizza and give it a gourmet, optimum nutrition makeover."

"Pizza Hut have announced it is changing its name to Pasta Hut. Nutrient-stripped white carbohydrates are the last thing we need. Research suggests we eat too much saturated animal fat and not enough essential fats, too much junk starch and sugar and not enough whole grains, too much meat and dairy and not enough fibre-rich, mineral-rich plant-based proteins. All these imbalances have led to a modern plague of preventable chronic diseases," warns Yvonne.

Foods for Life have challenged all the major pizza restaurants to add a healthier version to their pizza menus so that the 45 percent of diners who would prefer to eat healthier food have accessible, healthier choices

Yvonne's vegan husband, Tony, author of a new vegan cookbook by Lorenz called. "The Complete Book of Vegan Cooking," says, "We thought it would be a good way to mark Animal Aids' World Vegan month and Veganisms 64th birthday by suggesting an animal-free pizza recipe with 64 nutritious ingredients."

"Our pizzaz pizza recipe is not only a delicious feast but is veggie-liciously packed with vegetables, complex carbohydrates, protein, essential fats, vitamins, minerals - rich in the basic nutrients you need to move towards a healthier lifestyle," says Yvonne.

At around 730 calories a typical normal pepperoni pizza has nearly as much fat, even more carbohydrates and less protein than a McDonald's Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

A 6-slice medium pan Pizza Hut Pepperoni Pizza has 2112 Kcals, 117g of fat, 164g of carbohydrates, 10g of salt and 101g of protein.

Foods for Life are committed to encouraging a healthier choice on restaurant menus. Learn more about the work of Foods For Life at 'http://www.foodsforlife.org'.
