January Calendar (with Music Video) and Curators Choice December Announced

NEW YORK/EWORLDWIRE/Jan. 5, 2009 --- CLASSIC & FEROCIOUS OWNERSHIP -- When D. S. Wade of the First Street Gallery in Chelsea completes the selection of the January 2009 N*des-of-the-Month, it becomes clear that the calendar speaks to two themes: personality and complexity. First, Ms. Wade looks for the artists to represent each individual figure's unique humanity -- as subject, not as object. Second, she relishes and delights in the development of layers of ambiguity, by which the artists take the timeless genre of the nude and redefine it. The works she selects represent explorations (she calls some delicate, others ferocious). The figures hide and reveal both form and meaning.

Her choices are resonant of classical figures adapting to the 21st century -- twisting, often raw, powerful, but strongly composed, in demeanor as well as in space. She agonizes over the choices -- only 31 works can be chosen. At the end she says, "Once people catch on, [barebrush] will be phenomenal ..."

Curators' Choice Awards for December Announced

Winners for the December Curators' Choice Awards are announced after a month of voting. Top honors go to artist Hector Olvera of Santiago, Mexico, for his aptly named oil, "The Amazon." The December calendar was curated by David Thompson of Serrano Contemporary/Sonnet Gallery in NYC.
