ATLANTA/EWORLDWIRE/March 6, 2009 --- Governor Rick Perry has issued an official proclamation welcoming The National Society of High School Scholars to a special Scholar Event being held on the University of Texas (UT) campus in Austin on Saturday, March 7, 2009."NSHSS understands the importance of a quality education for our nation's youth. NSHSS encourages high school students to pursue excellence and exploit their talents," said Governor Perry in his proclamation letter.
This occasion honors outstanding high school student members from across Texas and the United States. The theme of the event is Learn, Lead, Change the World, and the featured speaker is Claes Nobel, senior member of the Nobel family which established the Nobel Prizes, and Chair of the NSHSS Advisory Board.
Notable speakers from the University include Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement, and Director of Admissions Augustine Garza. The program also will include of a UT student panel discussion
Additionally, NSHSS Student Council member Britney Cooks, University of Texas at Austin junior from Houston, will address the group. She is majoring in Deaf Education-Deafness Studies and is a Resident Assistant, a member of the Student Volunteer Board, and a Rapport Service Scholar who enjoys mentoring and assisting younger students.
Mr. Nobel will recognize Texas Educators of Distinction, who have been selected by members as outstanding role educators and role models.
During the program, UT's musical Men's Chorus will perform. The event will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the Gregory Gymnasium on campus.
"These honor students have reached great heights by consistently demonstrating academic strength and community leadership, and we are pleased to show our pride and support," said Mr. Nobel. "What our members are doing in their schools and in their hometowns is truly admirable, and each of them highlights the hope and the confidence we all should have in our young people."
The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) was formed in 2002 to recognize academic excellence at the high school level and to encourage members of the organization to apply their unique talents, vision and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world. Currently, the NSHSS has members in the United States and 180 countries representing 22,000 high schools and has awarded over $400,000 in scholarships.
