For Immediate Release
FAIRFAX, Va./EWORLDWIRE/March 6, 2006 --- AFCEA International is proud to announce that VADM Herb Browne, USN (Ret.), President and CEO, has been named as the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’ & Airmen’s Club (SSMAC) 2006 Civilian Honoree for “Service to the Nation”. Ms. Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, Chairman of the American Red Cross, will present the award at the Club's annual Military Ball, being held October 4 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. This year's military recipient, ADM (Sel) Thad Allen, USCG, Commandant-Designate, U.S. Coast Guard, will also be honored at this event.Under the leadership of VADM Browne, AFCEA International has been a strong supporter of SSMAC. In 2005 the Association raised several thousand dollars to support a weekend in New York City for combat amputees participating in the New York City Marathon. “The Club’s focus on young people is very special,” relates Browne. “I am proud to support this organization that dedicates itself to improving the lives of our service members, and I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award.”
VADM Browne has dedicated his career to service to the nation. He served 35 years in the United States Navy before his retirement in October 2001. His last position was Deputy Commander in Chief of U.S. Space Command, where he was instrumental in establishing computer network defense as a new mission area across the Department of Defense. Prior to this assignment, VADM Browne was the Commander of the U.S. Third Fleet, San Diego, where he directed a $25 million renovation of the fleet's command ship, setting a new standard for afloat command and control. The Admiral's combat experience includes combat missions over Vietnam as a naval aviator, and Commander of the USS John F. Kennedy during its deployment to the Red Sea in support of Operation Desert Storm.
During his Naval career, the Admiral received many awards and commendations, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal. He has also been recognized for his work with the Intelligence Community, as a recipient of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) Medal of Distinguished Service and the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) Medallion for Excellence. In 2004 he was selected to “The FEDERAL 100” for his support of Government/Industry partnerships.
In 1919, Mrs. Cornelia Barnes Rogers and Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., along with General John J. Pershing, founded The Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’ and Airmen’s Club, and dedicated it to “Serving Those Who Have Served Their Country.” In war and peace, supported solely by donations of patriotic citizens, and without any U.S. Government funding, it has ever since been a “Home Away From Home” for over 2,500,000 men and women of the Armed Forces and their families. The Club’s warm, friendly, and safe environment provides hospitality and accommodations for 15,000 Armed Forces personnel annually.
