California World War One Honor Roll Posted Online By The Digital Bookshelf

New publication honors over 3,400 Californians who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War.

For Immediate Release

SACRAMENTO, Calif./EWORLDWIRE/Nov. 11, 2007 --- Soldiers, sailors and marines from California who died during World War I will be honored on Veterans' Day by a new online honor roll at the California State Military Museum Web site ('http://www.militarymuseum.org'). According to Daniel M. Sebby, the museum director, this list is a terrific way to honor California's World War One heroes.

Said Sebby, "Veterans' Day is a day to remember all of those who have served in uniform Those who paid the ultimate price hold a special place in our hearts, and their sacrifices must never be forgotten."

The California World War One Honor Roll will be available free to the public through the museum's Web site starting on the November 11, 2007. It contains information on over 3,400 Californians who lost their lives during the war, and will be presented as an interactive document that can be searched and sorted.

The California Honor Roll is a small portion of a larger database of American World War fatalities compiled by Scott R. Schoner, owner of The Digital Bookshelf ('http://www.thedigitalbookshelf.us'). Over ten years in the making, the full database incorporates information from numerous sources, including over 400 unit and community histories published shortly after the war.

"As a historian, studying the American Expeditionary Forces in World War One has been my special passion for a long time," stated Schoner. "I'm fascinated and touched by the tremendous patriotism during the war. All sectors of American society pulled together to fight the 'Great War for Democracy'.

Schoner's company, The Digital Bookshelf, offers hundreds of World War One unit histories in digital format and was started as a way to preserve information that is in danger of being lost. Many of the more than 80-year old books he scans are in poor condition.

"My mission is to gather as much information about the American Expeditionary Forces as I can, and to ensure its survival so that the doughboys' achievements and sacrifices are never forgotten."

Both Sebby and Schoner are also veterans of the U.S. Army, which gives this project special meaning for both of them. Sebby served for over 30 years in the U.S. Army and is currently a Command Sergeant Major in the California State Military Reserve. Schoner served both as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army Reserve and as an Infantry officer on active duty. According to Sebby, those who have served in the armed forces, past, present and future, share a special bond.

"Thanks to Scott's research efforts and his gift to the museum, we will be better able to appreciate and honor our comrades-in-arms - the soldiers, sailors and marines from California - whose selfless service and sacrifice still inspire us today."
