SOUTH BEND, Ind./EWORLDWIRE/Oct. 30, 2009 --- David Nowak knows its no secret that the furniture he's been selling from Amish craftsmen via Amish Furniture Super Store are creative products, and now he holds recognition by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), Illinois Chapter, to prove it.

ASID held its annual Design Awards presentation in September and presented awards in a multitude of categories - from residential design, hospitality, medical, fixtures and furniture - and entry of a Mission style mail box by Nowak and designer client Pat McFarland drew an honorable mention.

This is the first year Nowak has submitted any designs to this contest.

The competition this year was the stiffest in the Chapter's seven-year history, with the organization reporting four times the number of entries presented as that in previous years. Awards in 13 categories were given for first place, and in many of the categories, honorable mentions were presented.

The mail box design tendered by Nowak is totally Amish, with a Modesto Mission design featuring fully exposed and functional tenon. Built in the front on the Mail Box is an unusual "kangaroo pouch" to hold outgoing mail, visible to the mail carrier. An additional but hidden element is the secret drawer to hold keys or a transfer box for the family. The secret drawer slides out from the side of the mail box and is not noticeable when closed.

Brazilian Cherry was the wood of choice, a very hard and dense wood that will survive the elements for many years. This highly dense wood is very difficult to work with because of its tight cell structure, but longevity is necessary for the extended life in the environment.

Collectively, seven designs were submitted, and Nowak stated that this was a very design-inspiring year with the assistance of his very capable Amish craftsmen.

The last seven years he served as a consultant to industry as a turnaround specialist.
