The ribbon sculpture is the work of IncredibleArtist.Com artists Linda and Charles Perkins, who specialize in creating beautiful, handmade artwork from found objects, wood and metal. The ribbon is a wire-sculpture mosaic, over three feet tall and composed of recycled red glass woven in solid copper wire. The DAP approached IncredibleArtist.Com about a permanent artwork for the building's entrance. The Perkins' proposal was quickly accepted, but budget cuts threatened the project until IncredibleArtist.Com approached Mayor Steve Pougnet, who got the City Council behind the project. Much of the red glass used in the sculpture was donated by people affected by AIDS: a mother's Tiffany lamp, a brother-in-law's glass vase, a DAP staff member's precious Baccarat crystal, and more. Donations have come from as far away as Michigan, making this sculpture a community project. The artwork will be unveiled at 4:30 p.m. during a ceremony at the Desert AIDS Project. AIDS activist and television star Morgan Fairchild and Assemblyman Manuel Perez will speak, and Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet will formally dedicate the sculpture. The event is open to the public, with an open-house reception afterwards. RSVP requested to 760-323-2118, ext 257. In addition to the main sculpture, IncredibleArtist.Com and the Perkins will be producing a very limited edition of 100 small glass-and-copper ribbons. A significant portion of the sale of these ribbons will be donated to the DAP. IncredibleArtist.Com is an art studio representing some of the finest emerging artists in Southern California. It is also heavily involved in events supporting regional charities such as Art4aCure benefiting the Premiere Oncology Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City. Linda and Charles Perkins refer to themselves as "artners" - sculpting for some ten years now. Much of their work is made from recycled, re-purposed materials. Bohemians and scavengers at heart, they believe things often have another beauty - another life - after its original purpose is complete. The work itself is environmentally friendly - they don't use soldering or welding to assemble their beautiful artworks. Desert AIDS Project is the organization in the community where people living with HIV and AIDS can receive comprehensive support including medical care, case management, and social services. D.A.P. continues to offer free and confidential HIV testing at a number of locations six days a week.
