Ontario College of Teachers Editorial Board Rejects Ad for Layman's Petition, Authored by High School Dropout and Author Paul Young

Pre-public release of expose on educational establishment obstructed

For Immediate Release

COLLINGWOOD, Ontario Canada/EWORLDWIRE/March 12, 2010 --- Educators sincere about their vocation are unlikely to hear about Paul Young's book through Professionally Speaking, a magazine published by the Ontario College of Teachers, because repeated attempts to place advertising of "The Layman's Petition" - paid for through Young's own financing - continue to be rejected for a "missed step" here or a "rejected" there.

Young penned material that the educational establishment seems intent on obstructing awareness of, because it details issues relating to children abandoned by the system, who become academically and socially marginalized and disengaged. Young became a high school dropout, and at 50-years old, published a document that takes direct aim at deeply held social and cultural taboos associated with education. Drawing directly on his personal experience, he questions the moral authority of a system that fails to "recognize either the fundamental purpose or the medium itself, as it relates to human consciousness, and the role of dignity in a healthy and just society."

According to Young, "So many people hold the belief that all high school dropouts end up in jail. There is more going on with the human experience than a simple social/academic model would have us believe."

Young dropped out of high school in the mid-1970s when unskilled labor jobs were still relatively plentiful, but he contends he does not regret his specific choices, and he would discourage today's marginalized student from following his example.

"Opportunities today are dramatically different," stated Young. "All academically marginalized students must remain within a learning environment, and all students, parents, teachers and Ministry of Education officials must address the issues of an educational system that consistently fails to recognize its fundamental purpose within a democratic society."
