June 21-26: U.S. National SWAT Championships Return To Tulsa

For Immediate Release

TULSA, Okla./EWORLDWIRE/March 15, 2010 --- The US National SWAT Championships (USNSC) and the accompanying US SWAT Sniper Championships (USSSC) will return to the US Shooting Academy in Tulsa June 21-26, 2010. More than 30 SWAT teams and 40 police sniper teams from across North America and Europe are expected to compete in this world-class competition.

SWAT teams are considered the elite of law enforcement - the 911 for police - and respond when situations are the most dangerous, overly violent or when patrol officers require dynamic assistance. In recent years, they are being called upon more and more frequently to respond to increasingly violent and dangerous criminal situations. SWAT team missions require enhanced policing, tactical and weapons that must be constantly honed in training.

The US National SWAT Championships (USNSC) challenges teams in three areas: team organization, physical fitness and weapons employment. The eight competitive live-fire events are run in a head-to-head format and are modeled after real world scenarios. Prizes are awarded for each individual event, to the overall team Championship and to the top "ON Call" Team. In honor of the USNSC venue, an Oklahoma Cup will also be awarded to the best finishing team from the State of Oklahoma.

The US SWAT Sniper Championships (USSSC) require two-man teams, a sniper and an observer/spotter and follow a similar format to the team competition. The six USSSC stages place a premium not only on combat shooting - one round per target is all that is provided, but also on communication and decision-making within the team. A sniper team from Dallas SWAT won the USSSC in 2009.

"SWAT competitions bring out the best of law enforcement. This is where the teams and snipers get to test themselves against the best of their peers. It is exhilarating to see these guys operate - tough, fit, skilled, they really are impressive. Most teams use competitions as an extension of their training programs and it's their departments and citizens that really turn out to be the winners," said Dr. Jack O’Connor, executive director of the USNSC.

"It's a great competition, challenging, but fair. It's definitely not for the weak or faint of heart," according to Captain Larry Merchant of the Tulsa County Sheriff's Department. "We're glad to be hosting the USNSC. SWAT competitions, particularly the USNSC, are a good opportunity for the public to see the high level of skill SWAT officers have. It's action and skill the average citizen doesn't really get to see. They'll be impressed."

The USNSC activities also include two days of weapons and tactics training from some of law enforcement's top SWAT experts and a two-day Vendor Exhibition where companies display the equipment, services and technology so important to modern day police work. The press is welcome at all USNSC and USSSC activities.
