Behavior Analyst Certification Board Introduces a New Credential for Behavior Technicians

For Immediate Release

LITTLETON, Colo./EWORLDWIRE/Dec. 9, 2013 --- The Behavior Analyst Certification Board(R) (BACB(R)) (http://www.bacb.com) has introduced a new credential for behavior technicians, the front-line staff who implement behavior plans - the Registered Behavior Technician(TM) (RBT(TM)).

According to BACB CEO James E. Carr, Ph.D., BCBA-D, "The number of behavior technicians has grown along with the demand for quality applied behavior analysis services. This growth, along with requests to identify and evaluate standards for behavior technicians by regulatory and funding stakeholders, firmly establishes the need for the new credential."

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) services are often delivered using a tiered delivery model in which a supervising behavior analyst, often a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA(R)), designs a treatment program that is carried out by behavior technicians who work directly with clients. The use of behavior technicians helps funders and service authorizers maintain adequate provider networks while producing cost-effective levels of service. The RBT credential will complement the BCBA-D(TM), BCBA, and Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst(R) (BCaBA(R)) credentials as an entry-level program that reflects the education and training necessary for the duties of a behavior technician.

The RBT standards were developed using best practices of the credentialing industry, including a development workgroup of subject matter experts and a large-scale job analysis survey of practitioners.

The primary requirements for the RBT credential are as follows:

To apply for the RBT credential, the applicant must:

- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
- Successfully complete a background check at the time of application
- Complete a 40-hour training program - conducted by a BACB certificant - based on the RBT Task List
- Pass the RBT Competency Assessment administered by a BACB certificant

In addition, RBTs must obtain ongoing supervision - at least 2 contacts per month - by a BCBA/BCaBA for 5 percent of the hours spent providing ABA services per month and complete annual renewal procedures that include successful passage of the RBT Competency Assessment.

The BACB anticipates accepting applications for the RBT credential as early as mid-2014. The RBT Task List and Competency Assessment are available at http://www.bacb.com.
