Global Music Awards upcoming deadline April 25: Details available at www.thegma.net

Media Advisory

LA JOLLA, Calif./EWORLDWIRE/April 21, 2014 --- Global Music Awards (GMA), a top tier international music competition that honors talented musicians around the world, announces the latest winners:

Gold Medal: Best of Show

- Roger Myers - University of Texas, Fantasy and Farewell: Music for Viola and Orchestra, album and instrumental performance solo. Born in Australia, Myers is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin who travels widely to perform and conduct master classes, both in the United States and in Europe.

Recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios, the album teams Myers with the London Symphony Orchestra and conductor Michael Francis.

Myers commissioned Los Angeles-based composer and arranger Michael McLean to create this work in memory of his mother and, as a result, Myers' performance is highly emotive and filled with sentiment.

"I will never forget the significance of every note but, the actual world premiere - like with my Carnegie Hall debut, an amazing calm came over me, and it all went beautifully," Myers said.

Gold Medals: Awards of Excellence

- Arthur Gottschalk, Cello Sonata: In Memoriam, composition
Professor of music composition and theory at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. Gramophone Magazine describes his music as "rapturous, argumentative and prickly."

- Baaba Maal (United Kingdom), male vocalist
Senegalese singer and guitarist. His father was a field-hand and, as such, he was expected to become a field-hand. Instead, Baaba Maal devoted himself to learning music from his mother and is now quite famous in Africa.

- Dennis Tini, Russ Miller Jazz Quartet with Strings, Black Belt High!, composition
Distinguished professor at Wayne State University and internationally in demand as a choral conductor and jazz pianist. As one might guess from the composition titling, Tini trains in martial arts and is a karate black-belt.

- Javier PĂ©rez Garrido (Spain), Fantasia, Op. 14, composition
Spanish composer, conductor, clarinetist and music teacher. He holds an advanced degree in clarinet performance and composition from the Conservatory of Murcia, Spain. As a composer, Garrido has created almost 80 works.

- Joe Porter (Canada), The Traveling Carnival: Concerto for Vibraphone, creativity/originality
Percussionist who teaches at the Music Conservatory, University of Lethbridge. Porter specializes in
contemporary six-mallet marimba, vibraphone, symphonic percussion and drum set.

- Lake Street Dive, Bad Self Portraits, band
Indie jazz and soul band. The release of their latest album, Bad Self Portraits, has landed the band gigs on popular U.S. television shows including The Colbert Report and Late Show with David Letterman. They refer to themselves as a dive bar band.

- Sara Bareilles, The Blessed Unrest, female vocalist
American musician, singer-songwriter and pianist. She achieved mainstream success in 2007 with the hit single "Love Song", which brought her into the number one spot on the Billboard Pop 100 chart. Her duet with Carole King at the 2014 Grammy Awards has thrust her in the public eye.

- Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Give the People What They Want, band
American funk/soul band. They are spearheads of a revivalist movement that aims to capture the essence of
funk/soul music as it was at its height. Jones' rich vocal tenor brings to mind Tina Turner, Gladys
Knight, and Aretha Franklin.

- Steven Isserlis (United Kingdom), instrumental performance solo
Acclaimed worldwide for his technique and musicianship. Recent performances from this British cellist include
the Berlin Philharmonic, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Washington National Symphony, and Carnegie
Hall.

- The Sword, The Sword, band
Commonly categorized as a hard rock metal band, heavily influenced by groups such as Black Sabbath and Sleep. The band is composed of vocalist and guitarist John D. Cronise, guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie, and drummer Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III.

- Ulysses Owens Jr., Ulysses Owens Jr., instrumental performance within a group
Juilliard graduate who received his first Grammy Award in 2010 for his performance as part of Kurt Elling's,
Dedicated to You, and his second in 2012 for Christian McBride's big band album, The Good Feeling.
