Global Music Awards upcoming deadline Sept. 19, 2014: Details available at www.thegma.net

For Immediate Release

LA JOLLA, Calif./EWORLDWIRE/Aug. 25, 2014 --- Global Music Awards (GMA), a top tier international music competition that honors talented musicians around the world, announces the latest winners:

Gold Medal: Best of Show

Howard Mostrom - Uber Entertainment, Planetary Annihilation, video game music: Global Music Awards' top honors go to Mostrom for composing the big sound and complex music for the real-time strategy computer game, Planetary Annihilation. Mostrom is a master at creating a sonic palette and making games come alive. When asked about the most challenging issue in writing music for video gaming, he said, "(It is) to remain compelling while not getting repetitive throughout multiple listens. When I write for linear media, I write differently, because I don’t have to worry about how many times the player might hear one particular piece."

Gold Medals: Awards of Excellence

The Black Prairie, Let it Out band is a six-piece, rock-infused bluegrass band that includes four members of The Decemberists. It has been a mostly instrumental band for years, but on its fourth album, Fortune, there is a lot of singing. The band has always had a good sense of humor, and this video for Let It Out - which features violinist Annalisa Tornfelt on vocals - will give listeners good insight into their twisted ways.

Fureya Unal - Divan Consort (Los Angeles/United States, Turkey): Founded by the Turkish pianist Unal, for the band's album, Refuge. The debut album features five pieces including music by Portuguese composer Nuno Malo, Turkish composer Ozkan Manav, American composer Ken Walicki, world famous Chinese composer Chen Yi, and renowned Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. Unal is a member of the faculty at California State University, Fullerton, and Santa Ana College.

Hozier (Ireland), To Be Alone: Male Vocalist, for the extended play (EP), Take Me to Church (2013). The title track became his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube and reddit. Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP, From Eden, and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. His debut solo record, Hozier, is intended for a September release.

Kim Planert Music Inc. (United States/Germany): Original score/soundtrack movie and television for the feature film, A Reason. Before moving to the states, Planert worked as a sound engineer and producer in the United Kingdom for over a decade. There he recorded and mixed soundtracks for films including American Cousins and The Bone Collector. Planert is now based out of Los Angeles and is scoring season five of ABC's prime-time television show, Castle, alongside Robert Duncan.

Lee Fields & The Expressions, Emma Jean, band: Since releasing his first album in 1969, Fields has continued to make music for the last 45 years. Most recently soul legend Fields has re-teamed with The Expressions for a new album, Emma Jean, on Brooklyn's Truth & Soul Records. At a time when many new artists are trying to emulate the soul and swagger of the 1960s, Fields showers listeners with authenticity on the 11-track set, highlighted by first single, Magnolia.

Melissa Aldana (Chile), Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio, jazz: The self-titled album, Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio, is the first recording of the three band mates together: Saxophonist Aldana, bassist Pablo Menares, and drummer Francisco Mela. In September 2013, Aldana became the first female instrumentalist and first South American ever to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition.

Southeastern Wind Symphony, Southeastern Wind Symphony: Live!, symphonic band: The Southeastern Chamber Winds is a select performance ensemble focusing on one-on-a-part performances of historic and contemporary music for winds. This special configuration allows musicians to experience the highest levels of responsibility and flexibility in the music-making process. Versatile in instrumentation, the Chamber Winds explores literature ranging from eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to some of the finest contemporary composers.

Tobias Stretch – Christopher Bono, Unity, music video: Constructed from over 10,000 pictures, Unity was made for an original choral work by avant-garde composer Christopher Bono. Bono's choral work is based on some of the musical and philosophical concepts of Plato's Republic. The lyrics are based on the words of Plato: "What is absolute unity? This is the way, in which the study of One has the power of drawing and converting the mind to the contemplation of true being."
