For Immediate Release

CLEVELAND/EWORLDWIRE/Nov. 6, 2015 --- Health Legacy of Cleveland Inc. (HLC) announces the seventh Award and Scholarship Dinner held on Sunday, October 11, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Landerhaven in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. The event reflects the organization's mission to promote diversity in medicine and dentistry through partnerships within the Cleveland community.

Giesele R. Greene, M.D., FACP, senior vice president and chief medical officer, Sisters of Charity Health System, was the event chair and presented Sister Judith Ann Karam, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, and the immediate past President and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System, with the Health Legacy of Cleveland Award for Excellence. Sister Judith is also the President of Catholic Healthcare Association (CHA). Since 1851, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine have been serving the Cleveland community becoming the first with public health nurses visiting the sick in their homes. In 1865, Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine founded St. Vincent Charity Hospital where the first open heart surgery was performed in the Midwest. The Sisters of Charity Health System has worked tirelessly to combat disparity and help to mitigate the social determinants of health in the community.

As the Speaker Sponsor, Susanna Krey, honorary chair and president,The Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland, introduced the event's keynote speaker, Regina M. Benjamin, M.D., the 18th Surgeon General of the United States was America's Doctor. She provided the public with the best scientific information available on how to improve the health of the nation. Dr. Benjamin also oversaw the operational command of 6,500 uniformed public health officers who serve in locations around the world to promote and protect the health of the American people. In addition, Benjamin served as chair of the National Prevention Council, comprised of 17 cabinet-level federal agencies that developed the National Prevention Strategy, a roadmap for the nation’s health. Recently, Benjamin has been appointed to the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals Boards of Directors. She will also serve on the Quality and Health Improvement committee, as well as the Finance committees. From Benjamin early days as the founder of a rural health clinic in Alabama - which she kept in operation despite destruction inflicted by hurricanes George and Katrina, as well as a devastating fire - to her leadership role in the worldwide advancement of preventive healthcare, Dr. Benjamin has forged a career that has been recognized by a broad spectrum of organizations and publications.

Sixty local professionals were inducted into the Inaugural Health Equity Honor Roll from the categories of Health Care Services, Community, Business, Government, Education and Faith.

Status denoting Meritorious Achievement in combating health disparity is earned by continuous work in the Cleveland Community and affirmed by their actions that equity in health care services, access and education are important areas of focus for a successful community:

About Health Legacy of Cleveland Inc. (http://www.healthlegacycleveland.org)
Health Legacy of Cleveland Inc., founded in 1993, is one of the few African American funded nonprofit, public charities that awards scholarships to African American graduate students pursing professions as physicians and dentists who intend to return to the greater Cleveland area to practice. Since 2004, HLC has raised more than $600,000 from the Health Legacy of Cleveland Award and Scholarship Dinners. Accomplished 200 students have matriculated from the collaboration with Cleveland Clinic on the Charles R. Drew Saturday Academy. Health Legacy Scholars pursue professions as physicians or dentists and return to practice in the Cleveland area.

Of primary concern is the underrepresentation of minorities in medicine and its contribution to heath care disparities among minorities. HLC’s mission is to increase the pool of African American physicians and dentists in the Greater Cleveland area. The mission reflects the past, present and the future of African American youth, men and women who want to pursue health care professions and return to serve the greater Cleveland area.
