How A Handful Of Greek Orthodox Church Members Moved Mountains For An Irvington, New Jersey Special Needs Family

Sunday, May 21: Extreme Makeover Airing Features Family Found Through Greek Orthodox Missionary Works

Media Advisory

RANDOLPH, N.J./EWORLDWIRE/May 20, 2006 --- Moved to action after hearing the story of Beverly Turner and her special needs family repeated by their Randolph, New Jersey-based Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Sunday School teacher George Moshen, his class of 26 junior high school students of Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church directed letters accompanied by video footage recorded by fellow Sunday School teacher and videographer Ron Jaghab to ABC’s television program "Extreme Makeover-Home Edition."

Producers of the show ultimately selected Turner’s family as its two-hour season finale – on Sunday, May 21, the program will air the show reflecting how 96 hours after the burned wreckage was torn down, a new, 6,000 square foot home was revealed.

The Saint Andrew church members were driven to do more than simply provide basic assistance to the family whose needs were more unique than usual: 53-year-old army veteran Beverly Turner, herself afflicted with cervical cancer, asthma and myasthenia gravis, a degenerative disease that leaves her exhausted beyond her years, lost her 1920's era home to fire - a home which over 13 years had provided shelter and caring to 18 special needs children, some with severe disabilities including a 19 year-old quadriplegic girl in diapers using a feeding tube to sustain life and a 19 year-old autistic boy whose fits of rage at one time cost him his right eye.

Along with restoring the family with habitable housing, members of four Greek Orthodox Churches and the mayor founded the Agape Foundation to allow the public in the state of New Jersey to donate money, professional services, and other needed items without tax implications for the family.

The actions by Greek Orthodox church members in helping the Turner family are "the first of what will be many of our holy, Catholic, and Apostolic church’s mission work in the inner city to show the love of Christ and the beauty of Orthodoxy," added Moshen. "We offer our time, talents and treasure as good stewards of God’s missionary outreach to a hurting world."
